Computer Aided Apparel Patternmaking

In Computer Aided Apparel Pattern making we focused on using Browzwear to create patterns, how to manipulate those patterns, grading, and putting the pattern onto the avatar by using the stitch tool. For my final in this class I was tasked to choose apparel items in the Browzwear catalog and manipulate them to fit my target market and trend boards.

Final Project

My final in this class was to take apparel items from the Browzwear catalog and manipulate the pattern, sew it onto my avatar, and have three colorways, and create four garments that would fit my target market and mood boards. For my final project I wanted to go with earthy warm colors. I also did my view on a modern vintage inspired academia.

Target Market
Mood

Garment #1- Button-up Dress

The First piece that I had chosen from the Browzwear catalog was a button up peplum shirt. To make this fit my theme I lengthened the peplum pattern piece of the shirt to make a midi length. Then I changed the collar to be a peter pan collar. I lengthened the shirt to a dress because I wanted to get the modest vintage look and manipulated the collar to be a peter pan collar to correlate better with the academia side of my theme.

I decided to make the dress two toned. The first colorway I did a rusty light brown and bright rusty orange. For the second I did a deep mauve and a grape purple. Finally I did a light frasier green and a lima bean green. If I were to redo this I would do a different second colorway, I feel it doesn't coincide well with my theme and target market, I would also do more; like add lace to the edge of the collar and then make the bodice piece hit the natural waist.

Garment #2-Sweater and Skirt

For my second garment I chose from the Browzwear catalog was a long sleeve sweater and a short pleated skirt. To make this fit my theme I lengthened the skirt pattern piece to make it midi length. Then I added a mock neck to the neckline of the sweater by making a new pattern in Browzwear with the rectangle tool and I added it to the original pattern with the stitch tool. I lengthened the skirt to keep that modest vintage look and added the turtle neck to correlate better with the vintage academia theme.

The first colorway I did was cream for the sweater and a terracotta for the skirt.  For the second I did a deep red with orange undertones for the  sweater and a tree bark brown for the skirt. Finally I did a burgundy for the sweater and a navy blue for the skirt. If I were able to redo this I would work with the stitch tool to get the cuffs closed, I found that the downside of using Browzwear is how touchy it can be, so with limited time there were some things that were missed. However I overall enjoy this garment and I believe it goes well with my theme.

Garment #3-Babydoll Dress

For my third garment I chose a regular button up T-shirt from the catalog and I turned it into a babydoll/T-shirt dress. I did this by lengthening the shirt to hit at the mid thigh. I made the collar bigger and into a Peter Pan collar. I also manipulated the sleeves to be more of an imbecile/mutton sleeve. I lengthened the shirt into a babydoll dress to add a modern style garment because of the length and style, but I kept the trend of the Peter Pan collar and having an emphasis with the imbecile sleeves to encourage the vintage and academia style.

The three colorways I did were teal, coral, and light orange. If I were able to redo this I would completely scrap this design and start with something new. This garment is the red herring in this collection. This garment clashes with the collection and does not go well with the rest of the garments.

Garment #4 - Long Sleeve and Pleated Skirt

For my fourth and final garment I chose a short pleated tennis skirt and a regular long sleeve. I  made the skirt longer hitting the mid-calf, I left the T-shirt as is. I lengthened the skirt to make it more modest and having the T-shirt the same to make it more of plain garment.

The three colorways I did were two tones of brown, purple, and green. If I were able to redo this I would work with Browzwear to make the shirt fit on the avatar better, I would also add more elements to enhance the garment more while keeping that plain look. However I do like how it goes with my theme.

Reflection on Browzwear and my Final Project

My time working on Browzwear was straining, it was temperamental and difficult to navigate. Trying to make clothing and patterns lay perfectly on the avatar was difficult and ultimately draining. I have many aspects of my final project that I would change today; I wish I had more time to figure out how to layer the clothing for a better look and a more cohesive look for my collection. I would also be more adventurous with my designs and manipulations.
